The Other Side of that Palin Court Appointee Story
Gov. Sarah Palin‘ s recent appointment of Judge Morgan Christen to the Alaska Supreme Court, caused a dust-up.
Ms. Christen’s appointment had been opposed initially by the state’s social conservatives because Christen was [allegedly] a liberal who had served on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood. The Alaska Daily News headline was “Palin Bucks Pressure in Supreme Court Appointment.”
Progressives called Palin hypocritical for having Pro-Life (er, I guess they call it “Anti Pro-choice”) views and then appointing a Pro-Choice Lib to the Court.
Not so fast…
The truth is that the Alaska Judicial Council only forwarded TWO NAMES to the governor for consideration. Governor Palin selected the lesser of two evils, as the Independent Christen was a better choice than Democrat Eric Smith who has a history of environmental activism from the bench and could do serious harm to Alaska’s environmental and economic policies.
By law, the governor is not permitted any other choice. She must pick one of the two. “None of the above” is not allowed.
But now some folks have started the research and are questioning whether Christen ever worked for Planned Parenthood at all. Christen doesn’t mention working with Planned Parenthood in her bio, and PP doesn’t mention her either. The whole sordid event seems to be nothing more than a political smear started by a left-wing blogger.
