Photos from McCain-Palin Rally

These are a few pictures from the McCain-Palin rally that took place in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Saturday, September 6, just two days after Governor Palin’s historic speech at the RNC accepting the nomination for Vice President.

My sister and nieces waiting in line at 8:30 am outside the airport

We drove down to Colorado Springs and arrived at the airport at 8:30 am. The line to get in was probably half a mile long. When we heard there were no porta-potties, we regretted drinking those coffees during our hour long ride from Denver.

By 10:30 am, we got close to the entrance

By 10:30 am we got close to the entrance and the security screeners. We bought a couple of buttons but passed on the $15 McCain/Palin hats. Damn, it was hot and I could have used a ball cap, but none of us had brought much cash with us. Obviously, we are a bunch of first time political rally novices.

The sun was blazing hot at 11 am and 10,000 people were standing around with no water waiting for Senator McCain and Governor Palin. The jazz band sucked. We couldn’t even see the podium or the stage from back in the middle of the crowd.

Now this was promising. After speeches by the Bob Schaffer, who is running for the Senate, they opened it up and let part of the crowd get inside (out of the sun!) and closer to the podium. It was 12:30 pm and we’d been standing and waiting for Sarah for 4 HOURS.

Some of the things Sarah said were repeated script from Wednesday night at the RNC but we didn’t care. We screamed and hollered for her anyway. She could have stood up there and read the phone book and we would have loved it.

Sarah Palin spoke for a few minutes and got a tremendous cheer. I saw homemade signs like “Thank you Alaska” and “Sarah, you had us at hello” and “Sarah Barracuda”. We had managed to get from about 100 feet from the stage up to about 15-20 feet away. Just like going to a rock concert! Good times. Good times.

I didn’t take this shot but found it on the internet. It shows the two McCain airplanes in the background and the podium in the foreground.

Governor Sarah Palin spoke first and seemed truly amazed at the size of the crowd on a Saturday, and the overwhelming enthusiasm. McCain got a real kick out of it too.

How cool is this? That’s John McCain, the future 44th President of the United States.

They passed out thousands of small American flags. This turned out to be the infamous ‘Flag controversy’: a worker at Invesco Field claims he found 12,000 of these beautiful close 12″x16″ flags in black plastic bags next to the trash after the Democratic Convention concluded with the Messiah’s speech the Thursday before. The crowd loudly boo’d when they heard the flag story and had a great time waving them at the rally.

McCain’s plane took off for Albuquerque at about 1:45 pm right after the Colorado Springs appearance.

Go McCain/Palin 08!
